Electronics Recycling Process

Step by step process of e-waste recycling

Electronic waste recycling could be a daunting task for any individual or organization to handle all the processing themselves. Yet, it is an important reverse logistics step in e-waste management, which cannot be ignored or mishandled. the e-waste recycling process is an eco-friendly process that reduces electronic dumping into the environment and saves us on materials, resources, energy, and dollars from recycled products. The e-waste recycling process addresses both ecological and economic concerns of the world. Electronic waste disposal needs to be a safe and secure process without compromising data privacy using secure data destruction accommodating all the environmental regulations.

Electronic waste disposal uses a step-wise reprocessing method that starts from the scheduled pick-up, collection of electronic waste, and transportation starting from secure data destruction, and inspection of electronic waste. We process each of the electronic equipment for its workability. The reverse logistics electronics go through a process to be sorted for re-cycle, refurbish, re-sell and re-use. Our expert team recycles the units until most of the electronic waste disposal is either reused or processed to the source form. Only less than 1% of the total e-waste goes into the dump at the end of our recycling process.

Step 1: Pick-up and collection:

Metro green assigns a pick-up truck and coordinates the collection event. We also do electronic collection drives and together can plan the event date and time for the collection event. Once the material is collected and brought back to one of our electronics and computer recycling facilities, it will be inventoried before sending for identification and/or sensitive information removal.

Whether you have 10 or 10,000 electronic or computer equipment, Metro green can send our experienced team of removal specialists with all the tools needed to palletize, remove and transport your computer and electronics equipment.

Step 2: Secure Data Destruction:

The material in our warehouses after collection go through a thorough and secure data destruction process step. Privacy protection laws need secure data management and data destruction of all customer and employee information. The personal or corporate information collected in the course of doing your business is stored in the hard disks and needs to be wiped, erased, or shredded depending on the organization’s compliance with a variety of information security and privacy laws.

Metro green provides data destruction services using the US Department of Defense (DOD) standards guaranteeing information security for both business and employee data stored on your computer drives.

Metro green does a secure data wiping process even in cases of no particular information from our customers to safeguard identity theft protection. All company markers, stickers, and other forms of identification are removed, including any asset labels. Data deletion is performed on all data storage media including tape media, floppies, CDs, hard drives, etc. We also issue Certificates of Data Deletion or shredding upon the customer’s request.

Step 3: Shredding:

By default, we perform data destruction (deletion) and tag removal on all recycling shipments. Should the customer need more security Metro green also provides hard drive destruction services at a very low cost. Since shredding a hard drive is the only 100 % absolute method of destroying data from a hard drive, many of the customers go through this service. We can also issue certificates for the Shredding process.

Step 4: Sorting

After the initial data destruction and tag removal step, all equipment goes through the sorting step. Sorting segregates the working and non-working electronic equipment. All the electronics are tested using the appropriate methods before they are sorted into their respective groups.

Non-working equipment is sent to downline vendors for recycling while the Working equipment is remarketed or donated for charity.

This reverse logistics process helps in minimizing the number of items that go into the actual e-waste recycling process and eventually into the waste.

Step 5: Separation for reselling, refurbishment, and recycling

After sorting for workability, a separation process helps in understanding the electronic device, which goes through either for re-selling, re-furbishing, or the re-cycle process. Any equipment that is workable as a whole without any issues, can be re-sold for use by others or given away for charity. This helps in lesser demand for manufacturing the same equipment.

Any non-workable device will be tested, fixed, or re-furbished if possible and re-sold. For example, some devices, only need a small part to be fixed and can be used until its full life cycle,

Next, if the device as a whole can’t be used or re-furbished, then they are tested for their materials or individual parts that can be further used before discarding. Usually, different parts of electronic equipment have different lifecycles and are used with other devices. The materials and parts of the devices are often used in the manufacturing of a newer version of the same device or completely different devices and industries.

As a result of this process, we make sure all the electronic equipment that comes into our facility is completely re-cycled leaving very little scrap that goes into the landfill. Usually, this is less than 1% of the total e-waste.

Certificate of recycling can be issued at the customer’s request.
